When we talk about structures, buildings, or some spaces already built, do we think about how important light can be? We know that light can be an essential element to which we simply do not pay enough attention when developing any of our projects, either because the sun plays against the position of our terrain, because it is forgotten, or simply because it is not given enough importance. When we talk about light and the importance that should be in any project, that’s when we begin to see how it expands the vision and each of the spaces already existing or that are going to be created.
Light in a home is of vital importance because it can influence the state of mind, comfort, and create different stimuli in one. It also seeks to highlight some of the architectural characteristics that each of these spaces has. Likewise, light brings different benefits to people who enter these spaces, helping to create a cozy and comfortable atmosphere. Light has been an inseparable element of architecture. As Thomas Schielke said, “light closes the gap between architecture and our perception, revealing shapes and materials that our eyes do not perceive directly, but that are discovered harmoniously through it.” Therefore, these two tools complement each other, and this collaboration is not limited only to natural light but also extends to artificial light, widely used in all kinds of designs.
Nowadays, the need to create visually more attractive spaces is greater. Light has a significant impact on the visual perception of a space. You can highlight the architectural beauty, highlight specific characteristics of the design; for this reason, artificial light was integrated into each space with the possibility of providing different effects, allowing us to manipulate shapes and objects in order to give them a role in the design.
A plot of land was chosen in the south of Bogotá, exactly in the town of Usme next to the mayor’s office. It was carried out in this place since we are willing to create a living space with the implementation of a two-family use in each of the homes and, in addition, the use of a reading and stationery club was added in which a certain number of people can access these places and enjoy these spaces. The homes in this lot are related to the inclination of the land since each of them has a different relationship and their interior design is totally different. This design in the sector has a modern style relationship since to the north is the mayor’s office and it has a very shiny work that makes you play more with the beauty of this lot. In the east, we have a small number of houses in which we design so that there is a relationship with them.
The materiality of our project consists of a steel structure, brick with a diaper, and large windows that allow the constant entry of light. The design of these homes is intended to take advantage of the maximum possible natural light, strategically locating the compartments in order to illuminate and give prominence to the elements integrated into the interior of the project. The use of materials that reflect and diffuse light, such as certain types of bricks and reflected surfaces, also plays a crucial role in the way light is distributed within spaces.
For the houses of this project, it is of the utmost importance that artificial light also emphasizes it, since the lighting of the whole in which these houses are made contrasts with the houses, as it is wanted for the user to have different sensations at any time of the day. This set will have a lighting system that lets the internal light of the house do wonders from the outside and thus complement those of the environment.
Lighting planning is not simply a matter of aesthetics, but also of sustainability. The efficient use of natural light and the implementation of low-energy LED lighting systems are an integral part of the design of this project. These systems not only reduce energy consumption but also minimize the environmental impact, promoting a more sustainable lifestyle. The illuminated paths, the well-lit recreation areas, and the focal points that highlight the natural beauty of the environment are examples of how light can completely transform a space.
