In a world where climate change is causing severe discomfort and heat waves are becoming the norm, this project offers a moment to appreciate and articulate the language of daylight. By capturing the natural phenomenon of “sun glint”—when sunlight reflects off the surface of water, creating a shimmering effect—and translating it into a tangible architectural form, this project seeks to harmonize with daylight.
Rather than squinting at such brilliance, this design aims to reintroduce some of the beauty lost due to extreme heat waves that confine people indoors.
Much like the varied reflections of sunlight on water, the structure is enveloped in an array of screens. These screens mimic the diverse hues and intensities of light, creating a dynamic interplay of color and shadow across the building’s facade. Strategically placed openings punctuate this luminous canvas, forming a gradient path that responds to both the sun’s movement and the significance of the interior spaces. The size of these openings varies across the facades, engaging with the sunlight rather than merely blocking it.
The facade features a gradient pattern that ascends from bottom to top, gradually dimming and allowing for a personalized interplay of light in every room and function. In this design, daylight becomes a tool of personalization and storytelling, preserving not only natural beauty but also lost literature, as the structure functions as a library and archive.
