The traditional blue Afghan burqa is a status symbol for Afghan women. They have lost their right to stand in the sun. But their thirst for knowledge has not been lost, and the quiet rise of ”underground schools” has opened the door to their education.
We used paper to build the conceptual model, hoping to convey our idea that Afghan women can enjoy the natural sunlight, alleviate gender inequality, and usher in a new era for them. The rendering shows the dawn of sunshine and hope when the sun shines into the underground space. It symbolises that women’s rights are guaranteed and that women can take off their smocks and walk under the sun.
