The light has been fundamental in human history for its impact on the development of civilizations and the expansion of knowledge. From the mastery of fire to the invention of the light bulb. However, while artificial light has been a key tool in technological and economic development, its excessive use poses significant challenges to health and the environment. This project seeks to promote a greater use of natural light by rethinking architectural and urban design, encouraging practices that maximize its utilization in domestic spaces.
Alberto Campo Baeza has said, “Architecture without light is not architecture,” and “When an architect discovers that light is the central theme of architecture, that’s when they begin to be a true architect.” Campo Baeza values artificial light as a complementary tool but considers natural light essential for creating exceptional architectural environments. Currently, architecture has tended to overlook the transformative potential of natural light, opting instead for mass constructions that prioritize efficiency and economic profitability over spatial quality and human experience. This approach has led to an increasing dependence on artificial light, relegating natural light to a secondary role in building design. Therefore, our proposal seeks to recognize the importance of natural light in architectural design and revalue its central role in creating spaces that inspire, nourish, and enrich human life.
Usme, located south of Bogotá, has a rich and diverse history dating back to pre-Columbian times. Originally inhabited by the indigenous Muisca people, this territory witnessed significant cultural interactions during Spanish colonization. Over the centuries, Usme has experienced significant growth, evolving from a rural area into a major urban center. Its history is marked by the struggle of its inhabitants for the recognition of their rights and the improvement of their living conditions. Through its traditions, people, and landscape, Usme remains a vibrant reflection of Bogotá’s history and cultural identity.
Our project is framed within the commitment to preserve and enhance the distinctive elements offered by this locality. We focus on the valorization of resources such as natural light and the breathtaking views that characterize the environment where the project will take place. This implies not only an emphasis on the exterior design of the project but also on the creation of a distinctive and captivating interior that sets it apart and makes it truly unique. The materials we will implement in the construction, such as wood, will harmonize excellently with the natural environment surrounding the project, creating a sense of ruggedness by using concrete in the structure without applying any coatings to appreciate the purity in the elements.
We strive to blend contemporary aesthetics with elegant simplicity, maximizing both natural and artificial light to create spaces that inspire and captivate. We believe that the harmonious integration of these elements not only enhances the visual experience but also contributes to the functionality and livability of the spaces. In essence, we seek to create an environment that invites exploration and discovery, where every corner tells a story and arouses the curiosity of the viewer.
Our goal is to harness the variety of systems and products offered by VELUX and integrate them innovatively into our project. We aim to design unique and welcoming spaces for our users, where the priority is to highlight the optimal use of natural light. To achieve this, we will focus on creating a seamless blend between the aesthetics and VELUX systems and the warm, inviting atmosphere we aspire to achieve in the home. We want natural light to become a central element that not only enhances the visual beauty of the spaces but also contributes to generating a sense of comfort and well-being for those who inhabit them.
By remaining faithful to a design that respects and capitalizes on available natural resources, we aspire not only to meet the practical needs of our users but also to enrich their sensory and emotional experiences. Ultimately, our goal is to transcend the ordinary and offer an oasis of beauty and functionality in the midst of this rural-urban space, where simplicity and sophistication merge in perfect harmony.
