During the long journeys through the Mediterranean Sea, sailors used to be most of the nights completely out in the darkness, with the only cast of light on the deck coming from the moonlight and the stars. After several days overseas and some weeks sailing against the immensity of the sea, they saw a beam of light coming from the lighthouse, meaning they had arrived home.
This light pavilion is made to recreate the experience of sailing under the starry night during the day. The external skin, which makes this dry stone prism monumental, has various breaches, just like a reversed lighthouse. However, here it projects the exterior light inside, creating points of light into the darkness of the tower. The huge fabric hanging from the roof invites the wanderers to look up at the stars projected onto the sail of the ship, which moves in a subtle way thanks to the wind coming through the holes of the dry stone wall.
