Over the past two decades, there has been a more than 100-fold increase in the number of children diagnosed with autism in China. A report released in April 2015 on the development of autism education and rehabilitation industry in China suggested that the population of autistic children aged 0 to 14 may exceed 2 million. According to a study by DALSGAARD S et al. in 2020, it was found that 15% of children and adolescents in Denmark were diagnosed with a mental disorder before reaching the age of 18, including autism. Apart from China and Denmark, many other countries around the world also prioritize the rehabilitation and education of autistic children. Currently, various countries primarily offer education and services for autistic children through specialized schools or rehabilitation centers with an aim to enhance their social skills and facilitate their integration into mainstream society.
Due to the sensory and perceptual disorders in autistic children, it is essential for rehabilitation centers to incorporate more sensory experience design into their programs in order to facilitate sensory and perceptual recovery. Research has indicated that enhancing the interest of activity spaces and incorporating diverse forms of activities within the spatial design can effectively stimulate the initiative and curiosity of autistic children, thereby positively impacting their cognitive abilities. Therefore, creating an engaging space is crucial for the rehabilitation training of autistic children
The core issue of this design lies in creating an engaging space suitable for the training and rehabilitation of autistic children. On one hand, interactive communication is crucial for the emotional development of children, especially in promoting the rehabilitation training of autistic children. Integrating social skills training into interaction has been shown to correct behavior problems and improve cognitive and communication abilities. Therefore, the design aims to guide autistic children to communicate with parents and teachers through teaching activities, creating a training space conducive to interaction. On the other hand, incorporating large areas of glass in the fun space to introduce outdoor natural landscape can enhance the rehabilitation efficiency of autistic children. However, using conventional glass curtain walls alone may lead to indoor temperature rise and uneven illumination, which does not meet the needs of a healing space. To address this issue, one hydrogel material is used in the glass interlayer to balance indoor physical environment stability.
