Our eyes are swept away, so let’s let the lattices return!

In China, with the development of cities, we find that the proportion of window glass in buildings in cities is increasing, and on the surface, the development of technology and people’s pursuit of natural lighting and landscape are inevitable trends, but behind this phenomenon there is a bigger problem brewing – visual coercion. Under the high transparency of glass windows, light is easier to enter, and people’s eyes are also unconsciously blended with various events, but this is unconscious, it is a visual intersection that does not follow people’s independent will, and it will cause invisible pressure on people’s hearts at the subconscious level.

Starting from the trend of large-area glass windows in China’s streets, residential quarters, and high-rise office buildings, the project explores the impact and disadvantages of cities on people under the current narrative of large-area glass windows, and designs an optimization scheme without affecting the interaction of natural light. The installation draws inspiration from the window lattices of traditional Chinese architecture, and finds that the window lattices play the role of framing and separating scenes in Chinese gardens, and give people a beautiful enjoyment and light transmission. The installation combines glass windows with a window lattice made of flexible membrane material, and incorporates a control system to design a system that converts natural light into diffused light into the interior and isolates it from the outside world. It is superior to completely light-insulated curtains, and takes into account people’s feelings in terms of privacy, artistry, and freedom.
