PONTEM LUMEN
“The bridge of light/life”
The world needs to come to terms with the reality of earthquakes due to the tectonic mechanisms of the earth. This project, which seeks to restore healing to architecture and society, is rooted in the values and recent wounds of the region in which it is located. Pontem Lumen* (Bridge of Light) is a scenario based on an earthquake-damaged historic stone bridge. The working mechanism of the units created within the framework of this scenario is that the energy gained through the salty water obtained from sea water touches the human scale through light. Beyond spatialising the damaged bridge, the project aims to symbolise the bridge as a meeting point for people and a spiritually guiding light of hope.
The wooden-framed units are designed to integrate with the existing bridge, showcasing the project’s installation skills. The light circular units, positioned at the centre of the structural components, can be used as needed and are easily installed and removed. At the same time, the biomaterial surrounding the outer wall of the portable units provides sun shading to the hexagonal units, allowing the effective use of sunlight. The current proposal is to define the historic bridge as a recreational space by bringing together people from other villages in the region. The redefinition process is designed to emphasise the element of light, which is one of the basic elements of life, on the bridge to provide an atmospheric experience for the user and to spread the light on each route where the movement takes place.
