Our project, «Mind Your Step – Light Up the Way,» aims to transform dark or dimly lit urban areas by redesigning pavements to illuminate paths for users. Inspired by the story of Little Thumb, this project enhances safety and creates a unique urban experience. Utilizing piezoelectric technology, the paving stones light up with movement, providing illumination only when needed and thereby reducing light pollution. This innovative approach aligns with the competition’s theme, «Light of Tomorrow,» by addressing both functional and environmental aspects of daylight in urban design, while fostering a sense of wonder and curiosity in urban dwellers. «Mind Your Step – Light Up the Way» integrates the principles of daylighting, sustainability, and safety to create safer, more engaging, and environmentally friendly urban spaces. The project offers significant social, sociological, and environmental benefits. Enhanced lighting increases pedestrian safety and security, while the interactive nature of the paving stones makes urban spaces more lively and enjoyable. By fostering community well-being and contributing to the cultural and social fabric of the city, the project promotes outdoor activities and strengthens community bonds. Sustainability is a key focus, with piezoelectric technology reducing energy consumption and minimizing light pollution, contributing to a greener, more sustainable urban environment.
