The city has undergone tremendous change and renewal, and the memories of yesteryear are now preserved only on videotape. What would it look like if we could re-project the old city into the city center? To do this, we borrowed the design principle of the traditional Chinese art of ”shadow play”, which uses the angle of sunlight and the movement of shadows to simulate real old buildings and old life. By calculating the angle of movement of the sunlight, a light guide plate is used to collect the sunlight and gather it in the center of the device to simulate the projected light and produce all-weather projection. The scene is divided into different modules, and the different levels of projected light create a three-dimensional realistic scene atmosphere, and the old city comes back to life.
By utilizing the characteristics of daylight, this project hopes to awaken people’s fading memories of urban architecture and traditional culture, and to create a daylight shadow play in the city, in the hope of arousing people’s empathy and thinking about traditional culture and demolished ancient buildings.
