In South Africa, taxis serve as the most efficient mode of transportation, benefiting countless individuals daily. However, safety
concerns plague these transport hubs, leaving passengers feeling vulnerable and uneasy. One significant contributing factor is the
lack of adequate lighting, resulting in dim and shadowy areas.
Paradise at the Rank aims to transform the ambiance of taxi ranks, providing passengers with a sense of security compared to being
embraced by an angelic presence. Skylights have been strategically integrated into the roof structure to flood the space with natural
light. Upon entering, this light interacts with a specially designed reflective surface, redirecting and diffusing it throughout the space.
The central feature, the ‘halo,’ envelops waiting passengers, offering a tangible sense of protection and tranquility
This design intervention not only enhances the physical environment but also uplifts the psychological well-being of the users,
fostering a safer and more welcoming atmosphere within the taxi rank.
The rectangular structures has circular openings that cleverly create a halo effect
and is mounted to the exsisting roof.
Since the rank is busiest in the mornings and late afternoons, continuing into
sunset, it’s crucial to keep the area well-lit. When there’s not enough natural light,
the halo rings emit a soft, daylight-like glow using LED lights. This helps in keeping
the space feeling safe and welcoming for passengers even in the evening.
