As one of the most famous architects, Le Corbusier, once said, “Architecture is the learned game, correct and magnificent, of forms assembled in the light.” Indeed, our pursuit of light in construction is reflected in every single part of the architecture.
Today, the rising sea levels push humanity to consider relocating to new marine areas. A significant example is Venice, one of the most important cities in the world, which is facing this problem.
Our project aims to address this need by proposing the construction of various types of residential units along an artificial shoreline in the middle of the sea, not far from the coast. The residential units are divided into one-room units (composed of 4 modules), two-bedroom units (composed of 6 modules), and three-bedroom units (composed of 10 modules), all starting from a standard initial module of 3×3 meters. These modules can be freely assembled, each with a specific function: sleeping area, living area, and service area.
The main features of the building include a transparent roof with movable shed elements and light boxes (made of acrylic panel) on the facades. The roof, being flexible and movable, allows different forms of light to enter, ensuring the necessary illumination according to the residents’ needs. The light boxes, placed on each facade, serve a crucial function at night: they become luminous beacons that guide and protect those returning home. Thus, through the use of light, the sea at night is no longer dark and unsafe, and the building becomes a true refuge for people, expressing a sense of freedom and security.
