KOMOREBI – THE LIGHT OF TOMORROW – DAYLIGHT INVESTIGATIONS
LIGHT AS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE CREATED SPATIAL EXPERIENCE. LIGHT IS MANIPULATED AND CONTROLLED TO EVOKE SPECIFIC EMOTIONS AND ATTENTIVENESS TO EACH UNIQUE MOMENT. THE AIM OF THIS PROJECT WAS TO CREATE A MEDIA LIBRARY IN THE INNER CITY OF OPOLE, POLAND, SUPPORTING CULTURE AND DEVELOPMENT FOR ALL AGES. THE BUILDING GATHERS ITS ATTRACTIVENESS THROUGH SYMBIOTIC RELATIONS. PHYSICAL PROXIMITY, SHARED RESOURCES, SHARED IDENTITIES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR DEVELOPMENT ARE ALL BENEFITS OF THE BUILDING ITSELF, BUT IT IS THROUGH THESE THAT THE BUILDING ITSELF GROWS IN VALUE. THE CONCEPT OF THE MEDIA LIBRARY IS BASED ON THE IDEA OF THE ‘THIRD PLACE’, PROPOSED BY SOCIOLOGIST RAY OLDENBURG. A ‘THIRD PLACE’ IS A PLACE OUTSIDE THE HOME, SCHOOL OR WORK WHERE PEOPLE CAN FREELY MEET, LEARN AND EXCHANGE CULTURE. THIS SIMPLE CONCEPT IS A REMINDER THAT HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS NEED NURTURING AND THAT COMMUNITY DEPENDS ON SOMETHING AS SIMPLE AS MEETING FACE TO FACE.
DENSITY X DIVERSITY = PROXIMITY
THE APERTURE MOTIVE – THE PRIMARY FUNCTION OF THE APERTURE IN A CAMERA IS TO LET A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF LIGHT ONTO THE CAMERA FILM WHILE CAPTURING AN IMAGE. EACH TIER IS A SUCCESSIVELY EXPANDING AND ROTATING APERTURE.

THE UNIQUENESS OF THIS PHENOMENA LIES IN ITS UNIQUENESS. IN ORDER TO LET THE NEIGHBOURING PARK INTO THE BUILDING, AS IT WERE, A MIRROR WAS PLACED ON THE INSIDE OF THE CANOPY. THE ANGLE OF INCIDENCE IS EQUAL TO THE ANGLE OF REFLECTION. LIGHT IS A CARRIER OF INFORMATION. THE ACCESS TO LIGHT IS CONTROLLED BY FILTERS WHICH CAN BE MOVED ACCORDING TO THE NEEDS OF PEOPLE OR THE VARIOUS FUNCTIONS OF THE BUILDING. DURING THE DAY THE BUILDING FILTERS THE SUN’S RAYS INTO THE ROOMS AND AFTER DARK IT RESEMBLES A LANTERN, GIVING LIGHT TO THE SURROUNDINGS. THE BUILDING RESPONDS TO THE CHARACTER OF THE SITE, CONTRIBUTES TO THE URBAN PUBLIC SPACE AND MEETS THE NEEDS OF BOTH THE LOCAL AND WIDER COMMUNITY. THE DESIGN TAKES INTO ACCOUNT NATURAL LIGHT, THE LEGIBILITY OF THE FUNCTION AND THE MONUMENTALITY OF THE BUILDING ITSELF AS A WORK OF ART, A KIND OF COUNTER-DOMINANT FOR THE NEIGHBOURING CHURCH TOWER.
