As human activities increasingly exploit the oceans, pollution levels in coastal regions are rising, leading to an increase in marine phytoplankton and gradually disrupting the marine ecological balance. Consequently, the demand for marine environmental protection is growing.
We have designed an eco-friendly biomimetic device called ”The Jelly Stars” based on our bio-inspiration from Thaliacea. Thaliacea are bioluminescent organisms that hide at the seabed during the day and gather near the surface at night to feed on phytoplankton.
”The Jelly Stars,” as an eco buoy workstation powered by biophotovoltaics, continuously collects marine and biological data while providing sustainable lighting for prolonged underwater operations. This device attracts Thaliacea, improving the marine environment and supporting the carbon cycle. By day, it serves as a safety beacon underwater, and by night, it rises to the surface as a coastal warning system.
