ECORBIS represents a harmonious fusion of simplicity and functionality within a three storey building, primarily designed to house a gallery and a library. This concept reimagines traditional spatial boundaries by emphasizing openness and connectivity while embracing the transformative potential of natural elements. The absence of enclosing walls in most spaces fosters a sense of continuity and invites a dynamic flow of activity and interaction. Circular openings strategically positioned throughout the building serve as visual markers, identifying each space within its designated function while allowing natural light to infuse and animate the interiors.
The use of circular spaces and shapes in ECORBIS is not merely for the aesthetics; it is a deliberate connection to the surrounding landscape and site context. Each circular opening acts as a lens, capturing and reflecting sunlight into the building’s interior, creating a play of light and shadow that enhances the spatial experience. Water features, such as circular pools atop the roof further amplify this effect, with water’s reflective properties accentuating and highlighting key architectural elements. These water elements serve a dual purpose: not only do they contribute functionally by naturally cooling the air through evaporative cooling, but they also enhance the aesthetics and visual appeal of the interior spaces. At the heart of ECORBIS lies a central area that divides active communal spaces from quieter retreats, fostering a balanced and satisfying environment for visitors. This strategic zoning promotes a comfortable atmosphere, allowing individuals to engage with the building’s offerings at their own pace and preference.
In the rooftop, visitors can revel in the breathtaking sea views, where there’s a bar that offers the perfect spot for people to enjoy their coffee or drink while soaking in panoramic vistas of the ocean. Beneath the ground floor, the building extends its offerings with an underground floor that is a hub of activity and engagement. This floor provides a variety of spaces that cater to different interests while maintaining a cohesive atmosphere. Including the open events area which is designed to host a wide range of events, from cultural exhibitions to various performances. And the aquarium that brings the wonders of the marine world underground. The design is deeply connected to its site context, reflecting an understanding of the local environment and community needs. ECORBIS also exemplifies an approach, to seamlessly integrating simplicity, functionality, and sustainability. Through its open and interconnected design, use of circular forms, and thoughtful incorporation of natural elements, ECORBIS not only responds to the climatic challenges, but also creates a transformative experience that emphathizes the connectivity between architecture, nature, and human interaction. In the hot climate, especially during the scorching summers, this concept seeks to revolutionize perceptions of sunlight, harnessing its potential for the well-being of both visitors and the environment. By maximizing natural light ingress and minimizing reliance on artificial illumination, the space transitions seamlessly from darkness to brightness. This intentional exposure to varying intensities of natural light enables individuals to tangibly experience and appreciate its profound effects on physical, emotional, and mental states. The concept is an embodiment of simplicity, minimalism, and the integration of natural elements. The design process was initiated with a thoughtful separation, resulting in the creation of two distinct buildings within the space, each contributing uniquely to the overall experience. The process began by separating the overall form. This separation allows each building to serve different purposes while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic. The integration of openings was inspired by a circle, a symbol of unity, continuity, and community.
The circular openings are purposefully designed to maximize natural light, drawing parallels with the sun, a circle that brings life and warmth. A standout feature of Ecorbis is the use of courtyards, both extending underground. These courtyards allow natural light to penetrate into the building, creating illuminated spaces that are both inviting and functional. Also, One of the most distinctive elements is the incorporation of water skylights. These features combine the cooling properties of water with the light enhancing qualities of skylights.
The water skylights not only absorb and diffuse sunlight, but also produce a mesmerizing visual effect. This design element evokes the feeling of being underwater, with reflections and refracted light creating a serene, blue-hued environment that invites contemplation and relaxation. The two buildings within the space are designed to offer contrasting atmospheres. The first building is active, naturally illuminated by sunlight that pours through the courtyards. In contrast, the second building offers a tranquil, almost meditative experience. The north and east facades of the buildings are adorned with water features that enhance the aesthetic and symbolic dimensions of the design. Water surrounds the ground level walls, creating reflective surfaces that mirror the semi-circular windows. This reflection completes the circle, visually reinforcing the project’s central themes of circles, nature, and daylight.
