The art gallery design is inspired by the belief that arts and culture are universally expressive, transcending boundaries and celebrating human diversity. Focused on Yoruba society, the design seeks to create a space that preserves, promotes, and communicates the rich history and traditions of the Yoruba people. By integrating traditional Yoruba architectural elements with contemporary forms, the gallery symbolizes the evolving nature of Yoruba arts and culture. The layout, when viewed from above, mirrors the contours of an embrace, reflecting the inclusive and organic nature of Yoruba culture.

A central courtyard enhances daylighting and serves as the communal heart of the gallery, akin to the palace, shrine, and marketplace in traditional Yoruba towns. This space not only improves natural light penetration but also fosters a sense of community and connection. The design includes a 420-seat auditorium for lectures and workshops, emphasizing the gallery’s educational aspect. Supporting spaces such as restaurants, a performance hall, and temporary exhibition areas enhance the visitor experience, making the gallery a multifaceted cultural hub. The main entrance welcomes visitors into an immersive environment that celebrates Yoruba heritage.

Daylighting is a major focus of the design, utilizing several techniques to maximize natural light. The central courtyard acts as a light well, bringing natural light deep into the interior spaces. Curtain walls strategically placed on the façade allow significant natural light to enter while controlling glare and heat. Skylights positioned on the roof provide diffused light, optimizing daylight penetration and minimizing direct sunlight that could damage the artworks.

Architectural symbolism is intricately woven into the gallery’s design, incorporating Yoruba motifs, patterns, and symbols. These elements turn the building into a living canvas that narrates the Yoruba community’s origins and traditions. Pathways within the gallery symbolize the interconnectedness of various aspects of Yoruba life, echoing the importance of communal gathering and ethical conduct. The central space of the layout serves as the heart of the architectural embrace, where art and culture converge.

This project aims to create an immersive and inclusive space that transcends the traditional concept of an art gallery. It is a living testament to the vibrant tapestry of Yoruba arts and culture—a place where history is preserved, traditions are celebrated, and the spirit of communal unity thrives. Through this architectural embrace, the gallery aspires to inspire, educate, and sensitize visitors to the beauty and significance of the Yoruba cultural legacy. The gallery becomes a living narrative, offering a holistic experience that goes beyond mere exhibition, reflecting the richness of Yoruba arts and culture.
