The project of the modular structural system is a proposal for the adaptation of compromised school buildings by facing demographical and motivational changes. It aims to improve the appearance of the facilities by altering them to the environment and to strengthen the pursuit of educational improvement. Migration processes are a major concern in the country of Bulgaria. It has impacted the small villages and therefore their school facilities are dilapidated and unmaintained. After the digitization of the work environment during the COVID-19 pandemic, people’s lifestyles changed, and small settlements began to repopulate, necessitating the restoration of schools. Facade restoration processes take a long time and spoil the appearance of buildings. Their long duration has a negative impact on educational processes. As a result, people are forced to take their children to schools located in neighbouring towns. Our project intends to solve the problem of the appearance of buildings during their lengthened renovation.
The structure combines practical and aesthetic design, which can be applied on various facades with any type of shape complexity. The scaffolding is based on ringlock modular construction that allows 360° extendibility via the universal ring spike connection. On the bearing construction of the scaffolding are assembled complex structures of pipes, connected with triple lockhead elements, creating structures with a variety of forms, which are used for stretching a decorative canvas. Pipes that bear the canvas are much lighter than the other parts of the scaffolding, which prevents compromising the balance of the installation.
What makes this construction unique is that it can be used in many ways – renovation of facades, building new facilities, performing art installations, decorating buildings for different events, etc. Sunlight draws inside and outside the colorful stains, making rooms full of various colors, yellow and red breaking the monochrome facades of the grey city, for months or for a few hours.
Scaffolding is an inseparable part of the city environment that we often look at with neglect and disregard. We think that scaffolding must interpret the light of the youth, architecture, and urban progress. The upcoming should be dressed with light and hope for a better future.
