This project aimed at addressing the critical water scarcity issue faced by Thuisa Para & Jinna Para villagers in Bandarban, Bangladesh, situated approximately 2400 ft high in the mountainous terrain from the nearest Tingu river. In this innovative project, we aim to revolutionize water access for the villagers, who endure treacherous journeys to distant mountain waterfalls in search of this vital resource. Leveraging the region’s unique climatic conditions, characterized by perpetual nighttime fog and ground-level clouds, our solution harnesses the power of daylight to transform their homes into self-sustaining water sources.
Inspired by spider webs and natural water droplets on foggy days, we have developed a 4m x 3m polypropylene mesh coated with TiO2 spray. Positioned to leverage the area’s abundant fog and cloud cover, this mesh captures atmospheric moisture. Solar heat helps collect the water, and UV rays make it safe to drink due to the TiO2 coating. This mesh can produce 22-26 liters of water daily for a family of four.
Utilizing local materials and advanced technology, the TiO2-coated mesh harvests water and provides shade, protecting villagers from UV rays. It acts as a passive water collection system, channeling moisture into storage tanks for domestic use. By condensing collected droplets through sunlight, the system ensures a continuous water supply for the community. Costing under $200, this solution is both affordable and accessible, meeting community needs effectively.
Additionally, the project promotes community engagement and empowerment through participatory design workshops, where villagers are involved in decision-making at every step. This ensures the solution is culturally sensitive, adaptable to their needs, and fosters a sense of ownership and pride within the community. It is a testament to the power of innovation and collaboration in creating positive change for communities in need by using the power of sunlight.
