An Artists Retreat

The brief for this project asked for a building that could be a home for a single artist with a multitude of functions and a strong emphasis on light and building materials.

The home should be able to convert into an art gallery where exhibitions could take place for small groups of people. Furthermore it should function as a studio for the artist where they could create art or cater for public workshop classes.

A timber frame building with brick infill creates a rich interaction with its public precinct. With high and narrow windows giving the passer by a glimpse of the artistic process, whilst at the same time allowing soft southern light into the interior space.

The upper frosted glass facade allows soft southern light to flood the private living spaces within. With timber louvre screens to manipulate the desired mood. Sliding timber louvres also protects from harch east and west sunlight. This light is captured within the courtyard which also functions as vertical circulation as well as the entrance to the building.

With roof access to a small garden and incredible sunset views over the mountain and the city lights as its backdrop.
